GETTING A STUDENT VISA IN MONTREAL

Canada with its ten provinces and two territories is well known for its space. Vast expanses of prairie and forest with not building in sight. Indeed Canada contains an overwhelming variety of natural beauty. No matter where you study in Canada, interesting and even breath taking landscapes are usually just a short walk or bus ride away.

Relative to other countries, living costs in Canada are moderate. Montreal Students need in the range of $1000-1200 Cdn.per month (exclusive of tuition fees). Aside from tuition fees, the rent paid for an apartment or residence room constitutes the biggest cost for an international student. Living accommodations in a metropolitan area generally cost more than in a rural area or small city or town.

When you apply for your Montreal student authorization at the Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate in your home country, the immigration officer will ask for proof that you have sufficient funds to maintain yourself. Potential income from employment in Canada will not be counted by the immigration officer when assessing your financial status (an exception is made for teaching and research assistantships). If your intended institution of study provides a cost of living estimate, the immigration officer will require evidence of $10,000 to cover $3,000 for each dependent, to cover 12 months living expenses. This amount includes food, accommodation, t5ransportation, medical insurance, books, clothing and sundries. Tuition and other student fees in Montreal are not included in this amount.

The amounts required for Quebec are slightly different: $12,600 for a single Montreal student, $15,960 for two people (student plus one dependent), and an additional $2,640 for each additional dependent. A $500 installation amount is also required. You must meet certain immigration requirements to obtain a student authorization to study in Canada. You must:

  • Present an acceptance letter from the educational institution they wish to attend.
  • Provide evidence of financial support to pay for tuition and living costs.
  • Satisfy a visa officer that you will return home at the end of their studies.
  • Pass a medical examination if required.
  • It is sometimes more difficult to get a Montreal student visa than a Montreal immigration visa, as you have to get a letter from a college and university, have enough money to support you, and more critical is that you have to convince the officer you have no intention to stay in Canada after your graduation.
