A Cultural Rendezvous

"Hochelaga, Ville-Marie and Montréal"

Travel through the history of Montreal, Quebec, and Canada with the Chateau Ramezay Museum’s collection as your guide to the past, from pre- contact Amerindian times to the beginning of the 20 th century. Discover items, some rare, some unique, that depict dallily life in this country’s early years. On your voyage you will pass through the magnificent Salle de Nantes, remarkable for its exquisitely sculpted mahogany woodwork. You will then be transported to 18th century New France when you go downstairs the lower floor and arrive at the old kitchens and common room.

Where Montréal Was Born

The new permanent exhibition, Where Montréal Was Born, is an emotion-packed rendezvous with the history of this city born over 360 years ago. Highlights: Montréal's first Catholic cemetery, with an audiovisual environment, along with an interactive model showing how the site has evolved from 1350 to the present and a virtual fresco taking visitors back to a market day in 1750, as passenger pigeons flutter in the marketplace.

Marc-Aurèle Fortin, the Innovator

The new permanent exhibition Montréal Love Stories – The Cultural Connection, just in time for Valentine’s Day, looks at the stories of Montréal men and women who are passionate about Montréal and have chosen to live and love here.

The exhibition, located in the Ancienne-Douane building, leads visitors to the very heart of the crossroads of peoples that is Montreal. Drawing on objects and first-hand stories from Montrealers representing different communities, photos depicting urban landscapes, video montages and works by local artists, it introduces visitors to Montrealers, through their many cultures and traditions.

Bound to Art. The book as objet d'art

In celebration of the 300th anniversary of the Château Ramezay, the Museum is teaming up with the organizers of UNESCO “Montreal: World Book Capital” and the international association “Les Amis de la Reliure d’Art”, to bring you an intimate look at the evolution of the artwork that binds the pages of history. This exhibit is for book lovers of all ages that will revel at the chance to experience the artwork of these rare intricately decorated artefacts. Furthermore, this collection illustrates that books are not just messengers of ideas but are in themselves pieces of art that capture the evolution of communication, from Antiquity to the new electronic era.

Notre-Dame Basilica

This magnificent church in the Gothic Revival style, completed in 1829, attracts hundreds of thousands of worshippers and visitors every year. Its interior offers a feast of visual and aural splendours: sculpted wood statuary with painted and gold leaf accents, paintings, sculptures, the Casavant organ, spectacular stained glass, and more. At the rear is the smaller Sacré-Cœur chapel. Evenings, a sound and light show brings to life the Basilica's history and architectural heritage; concerts are often held inside. In the summer, the crypt hosts exhibitions.

Bonsecours Ceramic Centre

The Centre is a space for training, development and dissemination of the ceramic arts. A showroom presents pieces by renowned artists as well as younger graduates, helping provide exposure for Québec creators. The Bonsecours Ceramic Centre is located in the former No. 2 Fire Station, built in 1872. Admission is free.

Montréal World Trade Centre

This complex of office buildings, completed in 1992, incorporates the façades and other elements of several heritage structures, including the remarkable Nordheimer Building (1888). Inside, the offices look onto a vast atrium and shopping promenade built along the former Ruelle des Fortifications. Other attractions include a fragment of the Berlin Wall and a black granite reflecting pool with a fountain statue–a work by French architect and sculptor Dieudonné-Barthélemy Guibal (1699–1757) that originally topped a fountain in Saint-Mihiel, in the Meuse department of France. Admission is free.

Canadian Music Centre (CMC)

The CMC is home to the country's largest collection of contemporary Canadian musical works. The Centre's music library houses a collection of nearly 16,000 scores as well as recordings and reference information, such as biographical records on some 650 Canadian composers. On sale are about 700 CDs featuring the music of the CMC's Associate Composers, as well as releases on Canadian independent record labels. Admission is free. Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel

A place of worship for almost 350 years, the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel is one of Montréal's most significant and symbolic religious and heritage sites, attracting visitors who come to admire its religious, architectural and artistic treasures. Concerts are held regularly throughout the year. A visit to the Marguerite-Bourgeoys Museum includes access to the chapel tower, affording panoramic views of Old Montréal and the Old Port. Court of Appeal of Québec

Inaugurated in 1926 to house the provincial criminal courts as well as various government services, this building lost its original function in 1971 when the courts moved to the new Palais de justice built across the street, at 1 Notre-Dame Street East. The building was later the home of Québec's music and drama conservatories. Major renovations conducted between 2001 and 2005 have restored its full presence and lustre. The building now houses the Court of Appeal of Québec and bears the name of the main architect, Ernest Cormier. The lobby, open to the public, is an exercise in uncluttered volumes and materials well suited to the building's formal function: a court of justice. Also notable are the Art Deco torchère lamps designed by master metalsmith Edgar Brandt, and a superbly ornamented coffered ceiling. Open Monday to Friday.

Lobbies of the Big Banks

City Hall

The history of Montréal's city hall is more turbulent than its stately exterior suggests. Built between 1872 and 1878, it survived a serious fire in 1922. And it was from this balcony that General Charles de Gaulle, the visiting French President, famously uttered "Vive le Québec libre!" in 1967. As night falls, city hall is gradually bathed in magnificent architectural lighting created as part of the Old Montréal lighting plan. Admission to the lobby is free during the week; free guided tours available in summer, Monday to Friday. Reservations mandatory for groups; call (514) 872-0077.

La Guilde Graphique

Located in a magnificent 18th-century building, this workshop-gallery, unique in North America, is a space for creation, exhibition and sales of original works on paper and engravings by local and international artists. Also includes a display of centuries-old printing presses. Admission is free.

Bonsecours Market

Easily recognized by its splendid silvered dome, which has come to symbolize Old Montréal, Bonsecours Market, opened in 1847, has over the years been the site of a public market, a concert hall and even Montréal's city hall (from 1852 to 1878, to be exact). Today it houses cafés-terrasses, restaurants and chic craft boutiques featuring the work of Québec, Canadian and Aboriginal designers: craft items, designer objects, fashion, jewelry and period furniture. The Market also occasionally hosts exhibitions and other events open to the public. Open seven days a week.

1. Montréal Science Centre

The one-of-a-kind Montréal Science Centre offers a wide range of "scientifically fun" activities and lively experiences. It is home to interactive exhibits, an IMAX theatre, and the IMMERSION interactive movie game, unique in Canada. The Centre is on the site of the Old Port of Montréal.

2. Centre d'histoire de Montréal

Housed in a former fire hall with elegant Dutch-inspired architecture (dating from 1903-04), the Centre d'histoire de Montréal invites you on a captivating journey through the history of Montréal. The exhibit Montréal, Five Times highlights significant events on the city's timeline since 1535, while Montréal of a Thousand Faces, in a more intimate setting, gives visitors a sense of the daily lives of Montrealers, both yesterday and today.

3. Sir George-Étienne Cartier National Historic Site of Canada

The only Victorian building with a restored interior in Greater Montréal, the Cartier National Historic Site provides a glimpse into the bourgeois life and the work of Sir George-Étienne Cartier, one of the fathers of Canadian Confederation. Via theatrical presentations, interpreter-guides take a dynamic, interactive approach to the telling of history.

4. Bank of Montreal Museum

This museum devoted to Canada's first bank (1817) includes an exhibit of old banknotes, mechanical piggy banks and other historical items and documents that bring 19th-century banking to life. The museum is located in the most recently built (1959) of the three buildings of very different periods that have been occupied by the Bank of Montreal on this site since the early 19th century. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except holidays). Admission is free.

5. Château Ramezay Museum

This is the former residence of the governors under the French regime, built in the 18th century. Originally a private hotel (the name "château" came later), it was enlarged by the Compagnie des Indes, an enterprise founded in 1717 that exercised a royal monopoly on the exporting of beaver pelts and the importing of certain textiles claimed as trading goods. The building has been a museum since 1895. Its rich, diverse collection is a singular point of contact with the history of Montréal and Québec. Don't miss the Jardin du Gouverneur, a replica of an 18th-century New France garden, complete with café-terrasse.

6. Marc-Aurèle Fortin Museum

This museum, which occupies part of a building erected in 1874–75 to house five adjoining store-warehouses, is devoted to the work of one of Québec's most celebrated artists: Marc-Aurèle Fortin (1888–1970), whose innovative talents signaled formal transformations in the art of landscape painting.

7. Marguerite-Bourgeoys Museum

Experience the life of 17th-century Montrealers through the story of one passionate, courageous woman. Marguerite Bourgeoys–Montréal's first teacher, and one of the city's first founders–also saw to the construction of the city's first stone chapel. An archaeological site, uncovered in 1998, reveals the chapel's foundations as well as traces of earlier First Nations settlements. The belvedere and tower of the Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel offer panoramic views of Montréal and its Old Port.

8. Pointe-à-Callière, Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History

Located on the very site of Montréal's founding, Pointe-à-Callière recounts six centuries of history, from the Amerindian settlements to the present day. The Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History, inaugurated in 1992 as part of the city's 350th anniversary celebrations, features an unusual narrative populated by astonishing artifacts, scale models and virtual characters. Before embarking on the permanent exhibition, an underground tour of key archaeological sites, visitors take an amazing trip through time with the multimedia show Montréal, Tales of a City.

Champ-de-Mars

The field known as Champ-de-Mars was used for military manoeuvres and as a parade ground as far back as the beginning of the 19th century. Over the years, this broad expanse of open land behind city hall also served other purposes. Archaeological digs in this area between 1986 and 1991 uncovered the vestiges of the original walled city's fortifications. Integrated into the layout of the Champ-de-Mars esplanade since 1992, these ruins give a sense of the scale of the ramparts that surrounded the city in its early days.

Cours Le Royer

The Cours Le Royer is a section of Le Royer Street that was converted to pedestrian-only use in the early 1980s. It is bordered by former store-warehouses built between 1861 and 1872, which were redeveloped into apartments and office space as part of a major, pioneering urban renewal project conducted between 1976 and 1980.

Jardin du Gouverneur

Opened in 2000, the Jardin du Gouverneur is located behind the Château Ramezay Museum. Though it occupies only a small area, its layout faithfully reproduces the spirit of the private gardens of New France's élite in the 18th century. Divided into three sections (vegetable, ornamental and orchard), the garden teems with medicinal and aromatic plants. Guided tours and workshop activities are available in summer.

Parc des Frères-Charon

Parc des Frères-Charon honours Jean-François Charon de la Barre, who founded the Montréal General Hospital, and in 1694, the Hospitaliers de la Croix et de Saint-Joseph. Members of this congregation, the only hospice and religious community in the country for men, were known as the Frères Charon. The King of France, however, imposed restrictions on the religious status of the small community, causing it financial difficulties and eventually leading to its collapse. In 1747, the General Hospital was taken over by Marguerite d'Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns community. The space is currently being redeveloped.

Place d'Armes

Place d'Armes, considered as a single heritage feature–the square itself, its central monument and the surrounding built environment–resonates with multiple historical meanings. It is, if you will, the heart of the city's historic centre, summing up its diverse heritage. The square is bordered by the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice (whose earliest construction dates back to 1684), the great Notre-Dame Basilica (which, when completed in the 1820s, replaced the 17th-century church), the Bank of Montreal head office, two early 20th-century skyscrapers, and a modernist office tower built in the 1960s. In the centre of Place d'Armes is a monument to Montréal's founder, Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. The work of sculptor Louis-Philippe Hébert, it portrays Maisonneuve surrounded by Charles Lemoyne, Lambert Closse, Jeanne Mance and an Iroquois brave. In the evening, Place d'Armes and the surrounding buildings are superbly enhanced by architectural lighting installed as part of the Old Montréal lighting plan. Horse-drawn carriage tours leave from different points around the square.

Place De La Dauversière

Place De La Dauversière is a space for rest and relaxation that opened in 1997. It is named for Jérôme Le Royer de La Dauversière (1597–1659), founder of the Société de Notre-Dame, which in turn was an instrument in the founding of Montréal.

Place D'Youville

Place D'Youville extends from Place Royale westward to McGill Street. In 1843, Montréal was chosen to be the capital of the United Province of Canada, and the ground occupied by St. Anne's Market, on the western part of Place D'Youville, became the seat of Parliament a year later. In 1849, after passage of a bill compensating people for losses suffered during the Rebellions of 1837–38, mobs of furious Tory supporters set fire to the Parliament buildings. The eastern part of Place D'Youville, now called Place de la Grande Paix, was revitalized in 1998–99. The new public space, contemporary in design, is laid out in the form of a grass-covered shelf with a central axis evoking the Saint-Pierre River converted into canals, and a network of walkways that reminds users of the area's history as a physical link between the city, the faubourgs and the St. Lawrence River. The western part of Place D'Youville, which has been used for vehicle parking since the 1920s, is slated for redevelopment in the years to come.

Place Jacques-Cartier

Place Jacques-Cartier was so named in 1847 in honour of the French navigator who was the first European to sail up the St. Lawrence River as far as Montréal. Its northern end is dominated by a statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758–1805), erected in 1809 to commemorate the victory at Trafalgar four years earlier. Today Place Jacques-Cartier is a popular meeting point, almost always bustling with activity. It is entirely reserved for pedestrian traffic during the summer, when the sidewalk cafés bordering it are full of lively patrons and musicians, painters and street performers provide plenty of local colour. Special events are often held here. Horse-drawn carriage tours leave from points north and south of the square. The main Old Montréal tourist information bureau is on Notre-Dame Street on the northwest corner of Place Jacques-Cartier.

Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle

Though technically lying outside the limits of the historical borough, Place Jean-Paul-Riopelle is just a short walk north of Old Montréal and is well worth the trip. This square forms the heart of a newly designated area of the city, the International Quarter, created following extensive redevelopment in the early part of this decade. Flanked by the Palais des congrès (Montréal's convention centre) and the new headquarters of the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the square is home to a public art work, "La Joute," completed in 1969 by the seminal Québec artist Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923–2002). Riopelle was a member of the Automatist movement, and was among the intellectuals who signed the "Refus global," a 1948 manifesto that denounced moral and artistic conformity and prefigured the Quiet Revolution. The square is named in honour of this internationally renowned artist. "La Joute" is a sculpted fountain, and in summer, every hour on the hour from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. it comes alive with water jets, mist and flame.

Place Marguerite-Bourgeoys

Place Marguerite-Bourgeoys sits next to the Lucien-Saulnier Building. Its name and sculpted fountain commemorate the life and work of Marguerite Bourgeoys, a key figure in Montréal's early history and the founder of the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre-Dame, a religious order devoted to teaching. The fountain was dedicated as part of the celebration of Marguerite Bourgeoys' canonization by Pope John Paul II in 1982.

Place Royale

A focal point for the establishment of New France and the colony's later development, this site was variously used as pastureland, for the reading of Royal orders and decrees, and as a fur market, military parade ground, and public market. The years 1836 to 1838 saw the square's layout change along with the building of the Customs House in its centre. Named Place Royale in 1892, to commemorate Montréal's 250th anniversary, the square has long been at the core of city life.

Place Vauquelin

Place Vauquelin, between city hall and the Lucien-Saulnier Building (the former courthouse), is aligned perfectly with Place Jacques- Cartier, to the south. It features a statue sculpted by Paul-Eugène Benet erected in memory of Jean Vauquelin (1728–1772). Vauquelin, a captain of the French navy, was known for his exploits during the Seven Years' War. In the centre of the square is a fountain.

Saint-Amable and Saint-Vincent Streets

Closed to vehicular traffic to allow artists and craftspeople to show and sell their wares, Saint-Amable Street with its boutiques is Old Montréal's "Artists' Row." The southern part of Saint-Vincent Street, also pedestrian-only, comes to life with terrasses and spaces for artists and craft designers.

Dalhousie Square

The renewal of Dalhousie Square, completed in 2004, recalls the site's railway heritage. Some elements, like the work by artist Jocelyne Alloucherie entitled "Porte de jour," also remind us that we are on the outskirts of the old fortified city. The former Dalhousie station, which stands on the north side of the square, is the oldest surviving railway station in Montréal, dating from 1884. When the inaugural Canadian Pacific train bound for Vancouver left the platform here in 1886, it marked North America's first direct transcontinental trip between an East Coast ocean port and the Pacific Coast. Dalhousie Square, the former station and the immediate surroundings now shine brighter than ever, as part of the Old Montréal lighting plan.

Victoria Square

This square, named in honour of Queen Victoria in 1860, includes two sections (south and north) and was laid out in different stages beginning in 1811. The fine statue of the Queen adorning the square is the work of sculptor Marshall Wood, and was unveiled in 1872 by Lord Dufferin, the Governor General of Canada. At the time, the area surrounding Victoria Square was a prestigious neighborhood. The historic square changed much over the years with the construction of office towers around it, but has been reborn thanks to a major redevelopment project begun around the year 2000. Among other changes, the stretch of McGill Street between Saint-Jacques and Viger streets has been shifted back to its original configuration, which in turn has restored to the square its former presence. The new layout of the square reflects a contemporary design and now more emphatically links Old Montréal, the historic city centre, with the modern downtown district to the north. It also provides workers and sightseers with a magnificent new area to relax. Visitors can still admire the statue of Queen Victoria, as well as the splendid arch by Art Nouveau designer Hector Guimard–a genuine Paris Metro station entrance that was a gift to Montréal from the French capital's transit authority.

Old Port of Montréal

The city's port operations were crucial to the fascinating saga of Montréal's development–a fact acknowledged by the current Old Port area's inclusion in the historical borough of Old Montréal. Because the Lachine Rapids blocked further upstream navigation on the St. Lawrence River, the city was born and flourished at this natural shipping breakpoint. From that point on–literally–the port itself, the Lachine Canal (which opened in 1825 and allowed ships to bypass the rapids) and rail transportation made Montréal a bustling hub of commerce and trade between the North American continent and the rest of the world, and the pivotal point in an integrated transportation network moving both people and cargo and linking the Great Lakes, the interior of an entire, vast continent, and the coasts of two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific). For this role as a hub, Montréal merits the title "crucible of modern Canada."

With extensive redevelopment completed in 1992, Montréal's Old Port has grown into an animated parkland linking the city and the river, site of myriad artistic, heritage, recreational, nautical and sports activities. Although the area's history as a port dates back to the very founding of the city, the most tangible physical traces of that history reflect the 19th century and, especially, Montréal's emergence as a metropolis in the first half of the 20th century. Today, the Old Port is a place for skating (not just in winter), biking, hanging out, going on a cruise, watching frothy waters flow, or just going with the flow–a place to slow down and appreciate life in. The area hosts a variety of special events in all seasons, attracting several million visitors annually.

The majority of the city's actual port operations were shifted to facilities further downstream in 1976; the Port of Montréal remains a major facility handling containerized cargo traffic on the east coast of North America.
